Pressing India for an early decision on the pullout of troops from Siachen, Pakistan has proposed a meeting of the director-general of military operations of the two countries this month to discuss the issue.

Islamabad wants the militaries of the two countries to discuss the fresh proposals reportedly made during the last visit of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Isalamabad. The Indian response was being awaited, Pakistan officials were quoted as saying by the daily Dawn.

While the neighbours held several rounds of talks on the Siachen issue at the defence secretary-level, the matter has never been taken up at the DGMO-level, the officials said.

The paper said Pakistan proposed the meeting perhaps to allay apprehensions voiced by certain sections of the Indian military establishment over any decision to pull back troops.

Indian army held higher peaks and its officials believe that the recapture of the glacier could be difficult in the even of any attempt by Pakistan to over run it.

Pakistan had proposed to India during the last November meeting of the foreign secretaries that it could address India's concerns of troops pullout without directly authenticating the positions held by troops, which had been demanded by India.
