UP cops on lookout for fidayeen targeting Mayawati

December 19, 2007 14:27 IST

The Uttar Pradesh Police is inching towards arresting a group of fidayeen following an alert by state and central intelligence agencies. The agencies have warned that the fidayeen group may be planning to target a VVIP politician from the state by using an improvised belt bomb stuffed with high grade explosives.

Though senior police officials in the state did not confirm the alert, agencies said the alert has been sounded and the Uttar Pradesh police have been asked to step up their vigil on a particular VVIP politician, reported to be Chief Minister Mayawati.

According to sources, the agency had intercepted certain telephonic conversations between a module of two fidayeen, belonging to the Laskar-e-Toiba, from a city in UP and Pakistan.

"Now the police are in search of the two fidayeen,' sources said, adding that the two suicide bombers have already entered UP through the porous Nepal border.

"They have already been given the suicide belts for the planned attack,"' claimed a source.  Sources said that as per the intercepted talks, the plot was to use the belt bomb for the attack. The buckle of the belt would be improvised as a triggering device to set off the blast.

Incidentally, such an alert was sounded after the arrest of three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists in the state last month. The three ultras had claimed that they were in UP to attack Congress leader Rahul Gandhi

Sources said that the conversation was intercepted after the intelligence agencies stepped up their effort to monitor suspicious calls following the serial bomb blasts in three cities across the state on November 23.

Meanwhile, the security arrangement for the chief minister has been strengthened.
