Expressing confidence that West Bengal will emerge as the frontrunner in industrialisation, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Monday said that the Opposition will not be successful in stalling the drive.

"We cannot squander away the Rs 1,50,000 crore investment proposals. We have to generate employment for our young generations," Bhattacharjee told a district conference of the Communist Party of India - Marxist.

He said that like in the field of agriculture, Bengal has to emerge as number one in industry and "the opposition cannot stall the progress."

On Nandigram, the CM said he had wanted to make the area as prosperous as Haldia, which has turned into an important business hub.

"But since people there are not for it, the plan has been shelved," he told the conference.
