Assam cops give Black Widow hot chase

Violence continued to rock insurgency-ravaged North Cachar Hill district of Assam where a Black Widow militant was killed and another injured following a gun battle with the police.

Sources informed that the encounter occurred at Guruhari area under Dehangi police station, few kilometers away from Haflong town of the hill district at around 12 noon.

Police recovered an AK-47 assault rifle and a US-made carbine from the two militants. The slain militant was identified as one London Dimasa.

Police and the army had intensified operation at Guruhari area, where suspected Black Widow militants made an abortive attempt on lives two Congress leaders -- Dipendu Langthasa and Nirmalendu Langthasa --

on Friday.

There has been heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces in North Cachar Hills where elections to the autonomous hill district council were held recently. A new executive committee of the district council led by regional Autonomous State Demand Committee and Bharatiya Janata Party is being formed after the defeat of Congress in the recently-held polls.
