The Communist Party of India on Wednesday called a two-day emergency meeting of its national executive beginning August 28 in Delhi to decide on the "next steps" in view of the stand-off between the government and the Left parties over the Indo-US civil nuclear deal.

"In view of the political situation that has emerged on the Indo-US nuclear deal and all other steps in the economic and political field and government's domestic and foreign policy, the CPI has convened an emergent meeting of its national executive on August 28 and 29," a release said.

The party said the national executive will "decide on the next steps to be taken in the developing situation."

Meanwhile, the CPI-M top brass began a two-day meeting of its Central Committee in Delhi on Wednesday with a clear message to the government that it should not proceed further with operationalising the Indo-US deal.
