Indian doctor Mohammed Asif Ali, who was interrogated in connection with the failed terror plot in Glasgow, is on his way to Bangalore after flying out of Brisbane early on Friday following the return of his confiscated passport by the Australian Federal Police.

The development came amid suggestions from federal sources that the Queensland government would be happy to have him leave the country to avoid further embarrassment over his employment on the basis of suspected credentials.

The AFP confiscated his passport last month as they investigated links between Ali and Haneef, the Indian doctor detained and later released in connection with the case.

Queensland Health suspended him on July 27 after it was revealed he faked about three months of employment history on his resume when he applied for job at Gold Coast Hospital.

Ali will remain under investigation, but was free to leave the country, they said.

Ali's lawyer Simone Healy said her client was anxious to see his family, but hopes to return back to clear his name and continue working at the Gold Coast Hospital.

"He's pretty upset about it, but he's doing everything he can within reason with respect to that," she said adding, that Ali's 457 temporary work skills visa was dependent on his employment with Queensland Health Department.
