Left parties won't rock UPA boat

The Left parties, which rejected the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, would not go as far as withdrawing support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government, authoritative party sources said in Delhi on Wednesday night.

This assumes significance as it comes two days ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament when the Left allies of UPA will be raising the nuclear deal issue.

While the Left concerns would be forcefully voiced in Parliament, they would not go to the extent of parting ways with the government, the sources said.

The Left parties -- Communist Party of India-Marxist, CPI, Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party -- will hold consultations among themselves on Friday on their strategy to be adopted in Parliament.

The parliamentary wings of the four parties will meet separately on Thursday.

The Left parties on Tuesday threw a spanner in the government's plans on evolving a consensus on the nuclear deal by rejecting it, saying it would "bind" India to the strategic policies of the US.

They asked the government not to proceed to operationalise the agreement.

Main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has already rejected the deal and sought a joint parliamentary committee to go into it after which parliamentary approval is necessary to operationalise the deal.
