Traffic was thrown out of gear in several parts of the city on Monday with the Trinamool Congress resorting to a 'rasta roko' programme for an hour in the morning to protest Sunday's violence at Nandigram.

Groups of people squatted on different arterial roads and important crossings of the metropolis holding up vehicles and creating massive traffic snarls, city traffic police sources said in Kolkata.

Trinamool supporters made human chains at important crossings like Shyambazar five-point, Park Circus seven-point, Central Avenue, Hazra intersection, Gariahat and several other places in the city, the sources said.

Trinamool supporters were seen holding placards and shouting slogans in protest against the renewed violence at Nandigram on Sunday that claimed at least one life and left several injured.

A proposal for setting up a chemical hub at Nandigram has already been withdrawn by the West Bengal government in view of stiff resistance from locals and a botched police operation in March that led to the death of 14 persons.
