The Bharatiya Janata Party has sought a debate in Parliament over what it suspects resembles the Christian cross in the new Rs 2 coins.

The party's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that BJP believed the Reserve Bank of India should instead have used the Ashok Chakra or Satyamev Jayate on the new coins.

"We have given a notice for a debate in Parliament, when it meets again, on this cross on 2-rupee coins," he said. His comments followed the RSS' objections over the motif depicting a cross drawn out with parallel lines with four dots imprinted on their corners.

"We wonder if the UPA government, which has become synonymous with appeasement politics, is coming out with a new trend to use religion on money as well," Malhotra said.

He flayed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his comments, apparently targeting the BJP that dividing people for electoral reasons was a "dangerous practice."

"The Prime Minister should rather go for an introspection. It's the ruling Congress which is pursuing communal agenda in virtually every sphere, from social, political, economic, military to now in national currency. The BJP also wants debate in Parliament during the budget session, which is scheduled to resume on Thursday, on rising prices.
