Many UP candidates have not studied beyond Std 10

Major political parties have given close to one-sixth of seats to those who have not crossed Class X with ruling Samajwadi Party leading the list with 17 per cent such nominees, an election monitoring group claimed.

As for the candidates having qualification above graduation level, Bharatiya Janata Party leads the list, prepared by UP Election Watch, with 48.5 per cent followed by Congress at 48 per cent.

These figures are based on the analysis of the affidavits filed by candidates for the first and second phase of Assembly elections covering 120 constituencies in 23 districts, I C Dwivedi, former UP DGP and convenor of UPEW, said.

Seventeen per cent candidates of Samajwadi Party have not crossed Class X, closely followed by Congress with 15.96 per cent, he said.

BJP has 13.5 per cent such candidates while Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded 11.6 per cent candidates.

The statistics show that BSP and SP have fielded approximately 35 and 36 per cent candidates, whose qualification are above graduation, Dwivedi said.

The agency had claimed that 33.33 per cent candidates of BSP have criminal antecedents, followed by BJP (27.03) and SP (26.5).

As far as crorepati candidates are concerned, BSP topped the list with 35.83 per cent, followed by SP (30.77), BJP (30.63) and Congress (19.33), Dwivedi said.
