Madhya Pradesh government has failed to submit a report to the National Human Rights Commission regarding the incidents leading to the death of Professor H S Sabharwal in Ujjain in August.
The NHRC had taken suo-motu cognisance in the case and asked the chief secretary and DGP of Madhya Pradesh to look into the matter and send a report to it within 15 days.
The last date for submitting the report was Wednesday.
"We have not received the report from the government so far. Next week we will send them a reminder in the matter as per procedure," an NHRC spokesperson said.
On September 5, the commission, after going through the contents of press reports about the death of Prof Sabharwal, noted that if they were true, they raise the issue of serious violation of human rights of the citizens.
Prof Sabharwal had died on August 26 after he was allegedly manhandled by students belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad while supervising students' union elections at Madhav College in Ujjain.
The commission also took cognisance of media reports that the police present at the incident site did not take any action to save the teachers and prevent the situation from turning ugly.
The deceased's son Himanshu Sabharwal had also filed a complaint with the rights panel alleging the police had tampered with the evidence and was protecting the guilty.
