Describing the Malegaon blasts as a "diabolic attempt" to incite communal violence, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) On Saturday asked the government to view it with "utmost seriousness" and spare no efforts in thwarting terrorist designs to divide the people.

"Coming after the Mumbai train explosions, this attack should be viewed with utmost seriousness," the party politburo said, adding that security agencies must uncover the motives behind the attack and track down those responsible.

The party said the "links" between the earlier blasts in Nanded in April and the explosions in Parbani, Purna and Jalna in recent years "must also be investigated".

Conveying its sympathy to all those affected by the blasts, the CPI (M) asked the state government to spare no effort to provide proper medical treatment to the injured and adequate compensation to the families who have lost their members.

Observing that the blasts indicated "a diabolic attempt to create communal tension and provoke violence", the party called upon its state units to mobilise people against the "nefarious designs of extremist and terrorist groups and foil their attempts to divide the people on communal lines". It asked the people to remain calm and not fall prey to provocation.

The CPI said, "More coordinated and effective measures against terrorists are necessary," as such an incident had occurred despite repeated warnings by security agencies.

It demanded a probe into the blasts and said the terrorists would not succeed in their attempts at disturbing the peace because "...the people of Maharashtra will show the same resilience as that of the people of Mumbai after the serial train blasts."
