The water-level of the river Ganga on Tuesday hovered near the danger mark, threatening a flood-like situation in the district.

Water in the river rose by 4 mt since Monday to touch 68.56 mt, the Central Water Commission office said adding, the spate in the river was likely to continue for the next 24 hours.

The river's water-level in Ballia district was expected to cross the danger mark of 57.18 by Wednesday morning while the river was also in spate in Mirzapur and Ghazipur districts and its water-levels were recorded at 74.50 and 61.52 mt respectively on Tuesday evening, it said.

The rise in the water-level of the river was due to swelling in the river in its downstream at Kanpur and Allahabad, it said.

Meanwhile, the spate in the river Ganga has inundated the enbankments in Dashawamedh Ghat and other areas forcing boatmen and the priests to move to safer distance even as the river water in its upstream threatened to maroon the villages on either side of its enbankment in Chaubepur area.

The district administration has swung into action by making arrangements for boats to evacuate the people in the eventuality of a flood-like situation, they said.
