The Ganga and Yamuna rivers have swollen to dangerous levels and are expected to breach the danger mark by Wednesday, officials at Allahabad have said.

The water level in both these rivers is increasing by 15 centimetres an hour, following the release of one million cusecs of water by flood-hit states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

They are likely to cross the danger mark of 84.73 metres by tomorrow afternoon, they said.

Levels in the Ganga and Yamuna presently stand at 80.9 metres and 80.65 metres respectively.

Meanwhile, the district administration has ordered closure of all educational institutions while fishermen have been prohibited from venturing into the rivers with immediate effect.

Professional divers and boatmen have been deployed by the police administration at the holy Sangam and other affected areas.

Villagers in the low-lying areas are being moved to special camps where arrangements for food, medicines and fodder for cattle have been made, officials said.
