Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar on Sunday said the colleagues of professor H S Sabharwal, who died following violence during student union polls in Ujjain, should come forward to identify those behind the incident.

"If the teachers don't come forward, then what will happen to society? The government must ensure that innocents will not be punished and guilty persons are not spared," Jakhar told reporters in Ujjain.

"Justice will be done in the case and the government has assured it will conduct an impartial probe into the incident," he said.

"The country has an age-old tradition of students considering teachers as their fathers and even today I touch the feet of my teacher," he said while responding to a query.

Asked about the report submitted by the government to him on the incidents in Ujjain on August 26, Jakhar said he had not yet seen the report and will soon look into it.

On Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's reported statement describing Sabharwal's death as an "accident", Jakhar said the government's job is to treat everyone equally and to ensure justice.

Asked if student polls should be banned in view of the Ujjain incidents, Jakhar said the government must reform the system to ensure that such incidents did not occur.

"Outsiders should not be allowed to intervene in the matter," he remarked.

Jakhar had on Saturday asked the state to ensure that educational institutions did not become hubs of unruly activities.
