The militant killed by the police in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday morning had links with separatist militants in Kashmir and he had been operating from there since 1991.

"Dr Abdul Majid, alias Salar, alias Salim, alias Masala Wala, who was killed by the UP police in Lucknow Wednesday operated as a terrorist of the Harkat-ul-Ansar outfit in Kashmir in 1991. He later switched over to the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and worked as their operative in Delhi and UP before moving back to the state in 2000.

"He started operating in Rajouri district of the Jammu region and north Kashmir Bandipora areas," K Rajendra Kumar Kashmir range police chief said in Srinagar.

The Kashmir police chief, however, did not confirm the involvement of the slain militant in Tuesday's Varanasi blasts.

"I don't know that. It is for the investigations to find that out," Kumar told rediff.com

The inspector general of police said the slain militant was a resident of Madhya Pradesh.
