Curfew imposed in Kupwara

June 13, 2006 14:03 IST

An indefinite curfew has been imposed in Kupwara on Tuesday, following the previous day's violence. On Monday, two persons were killed in firing by security forces, while protesting the alleged desecration of a mosque by the Army.

Residents told UNI over the phone that police were repeatedly making announcements that shoot-at-sight orders have been issued by the district administration.

A local resident Fayaz Ahmad said that the police and Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed in the town in great numbers to ensure the curfew was not violated. He said residents were not being allowed to venture out to purchase even milk and bread .

Meanwhile, hundreds of people took to the streets at Trehgam, about 10 km from Kupwara, demanding action against the security forces who opened fire on peaceful demonstrators, resulting in the death of 18-year-old Javid Ahmad.

Official sources said Ahmad's body was kept in the middle of the road at Trehgam.
