Reservation bill passed in Maharashtra Assembly

A bill to reserve 50 per cent seats in private educational institutions for SC, ST, nomadic tribes, denotified tribes and other backward classes was passed without any debate in the Maharashtra Assembly on Wednesday amid noisy scenes by opposition members over Tuesday's serial blasts in Mumbai.

Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar rushed through the proceedings after the House saw two adjournments on the blasts issue amid slogan-shouting by angry Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party members.

Supplementary demands for irrigation, planning, cooperation, marketing, textile, agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries, industries, energy and labour departments were passed without debate amid slogan shouting.

Kupekar accepted the adjournment notice on the blasts by Leader of Opposition Ramdas Kadam, who initiated debate over the blasts issue.
