The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Centre and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members, including his parliamentarian son Akhilesh Yadav, on an allegation that they have amassed wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.

A Bench headed by Justice Ruma Pal issued notices to Yadav, his son Pratik, Akhilesh and his wife Dimple, for possesing wealth in moveable and immoveable properties that allegedly exceeds their known sources of income.

The public interest litigation filed by Vishwanath Chaturvedi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, had sought action for prosecution against the chief minister and his family members, alleging that they have illegally procured properties.

The notice was issued after considering the affidavit of Chaturvedi, who maintained that he was not guided by political considerations to file the PIL against Yadav.

He had stated that there was no political vengeance against Yadav and his family but had accepted on affidavit that he was 'adopted' by the Congress Party in the last assembly election to contest against Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh.
