US approves $299 mn aid to Pakistan

February 09, 2006 10:37 IST
United States President George W Bush has cleared $ 299 million in security aid for Pakistan, according to White House sources.

The aid money was made available by waiving restrictions leveled against Pakistan after President General Pervez Musharraf seized power in 1999 in a military coup.

The White House said Wednesday that the move would help US prevent acts of international terrorism and encourage the transition to democracy in Pakistan.

Pakistan is a key ally to the US that supported the US-led Afghanistan war.
