Mumbai police on Thursday arrested Shah Alam, an associate of gangster Abu Salem, in connection with the Ajit Dewani murder case.

A local court later remanded Salem and Alam to police custody till February 15.

Dewani, secretary to Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala, was murdered in 2001 at Salem's behest after he failed to pay extortion money, police said, alleging that Alam was a conduit between Salem and Dewani's killers, and that he had provided murderers arms to kill the victim.

Salem, deported from Portugal last year, is now in Mumbai crime branch custody.
