Sri Lankan war planes bombed a Tamil Tiger territory on Wednesday as the guerrillas mourned the death of their top peace negotiator Anton Balasingham.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam said Sri Lankan jets bombed a civilian settlement in Mullaitivu on Wednesday but there were no casualties.

The air attack came during a mourning for Balasingham, 68, who died last week in London of cancer and is due to be cremated there on Wednesday.

The Tigers accused the military of 'insensitivity' in carrying out the attack on the day of Balasingham's funeral.

Meanwhile, the military accused the Tigers of attacking an army camp in the island's north-west and killing a soldier on Tuesday night.

The military retaliated, but it was not clear if the guerrillas suffered any casualties.

In the northeastern district of Trincomalee, the Tigers carried out a bomb attack against a rival Tamil group, killing one man and wounding another, also on Tuesday night, the military said in a statement.
