Within hours of the acceptance of resignation of Bharatiya Janata Party member Navjot Sidhu as a member of the Lok Sabha by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, a non-resident India on Tuesday sought nomination from the party for the Amritsar seat.

Vikramjit Bajwa, who joined the BJP on November 11 and was made the in charge of the party's NRI Cell, in a letter to the party President Rajnath Singh said, "I wish to offer myself to be considered as a BJP party candidate from Amritsar where Sidhu resigned."

Bajwa in his letter released to the press in Chandigarh added: "I will relentlessly work for the residents and make sure that nobody, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, makes any false promises."

Sidhu had resigned after being convicted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh last week in an 18-year-old road rage case registered against him at his native place – Patiala.
