The senior superintendent of police and another police official of Kanpur, where a statue of Ambedkar was vandalised, leading to protests in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, were suspended on Sunday night.

SSP, Kanpur, P C Meena and Deepa Singh, the Station House Officer of Kakadeo, the locality where the statue was desecrated, were put under suspension on charges of negligence and framing an innocent youth in connection with the incident, police sources in Kanpur said.

Kanpur Superintendent of Police Sabharaj Singh said Deepa Singh was suspended in connection with the alleged vandalisation of the statue.

Police sources said action had been taken against Deepa for dereliction of duty and allegations that Arun Valmiki, a youth who was arrested for the incident, had been framed.

Valmiki was detained by police on Friday and released the very next day.

Meena was removed from his post and put on wait list for transfer as his place in Kanpur went to Alok Singh, Superintendent of Police, Bijnore, an official release in Lucknow said.

The statue of Baba Saheb Ambedkar was vandalised by unidentified persons on November 29 in Kakadeo, sparking widespread violent protests that left four persons dead in Maharashtra.

UP DGP Bua Singh and Chief Secretary (Home) Satish Agarwal, visited Kanpur on Sunday and reviewed the law and order situation.
