Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday denied it had withdrawn cases against any activists of the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India.

"Only political cases against SIMI members slapped by the previous government are being withdrawn," Minister for Family Welfare Ahmed Hasan told the state legislative council.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour, leader of the opposition Nepal Singh brought up the issue of withdrawal of cases against SIMI activists pending in various courts in the state.

Bharatiya Janata Party member J P Chaturvedi accused the Mulayam Singh Yadav government of patronising SIMI endangering the internal security of the state.

Terming the allegations as baseless, Hasan said the government was committed to dealing strictly with terrorism, which was an international problem.

Later, council chairman Sukhram Yadav directed the government to furnish the list of cases pending against SIMI activists.
