The Indian engineer abducted in Afghanistan has been identified as A Suryanarayana from Hyderabad, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said in New Delhi on Saturday.

Suryanarayana was working for Bahraini company 'Al Mayyad' which is into telecom and construction business in Afghanistan, Ahamed told PTI.

Government is in close touch with the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan and the Bahraini company, he said.

Suryanarayana was abducted on Friday evening when he was travelling from Kalat, capital of Zabul, to Ghazni. Taliban has claimed responsibility for the abduction but no demands have been made.

The kidnapping of Suryanarayana is the third incident in the last four months wherein an Indian has been targeted in the war-torn country.

Maniappan R Kutty, a Border Road Organisation jawan and engaged in building of Zaranj-Delaram highway, was abducted by Taliban four months ago. Three days after Kutty's kidnapping, his body was found in Kandahar province.

In February 2006, Indian engineer Bharath Kunmar, working with a Turkish firm, was killed in a bomb blast in Farah province.

Indian doctors working in various hospitals in Afghanistan have also received threats from the Taliban, ousted from power in 2002.

New Delhi has taken up with Kabul at the highest level the issue of security of all Indians working in Afghanistan. The matter was also discussed when Afghan President Hamid Karzai visited Delhi earlier in April.
