A Muslim man in Bihar has offered to donate his kidneys to Pramod Mahajan, general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, battling for his life in a hospital in Mumbai.

Mahajan was stated to be critical, but stable on Thursday -- five days after he was shot at and grievously injured by his younger brother.

Naushad Haider, leader of the BJP Minority Morcha, offered to donate both his kidneys to Mahajan to save his life.

"I have made this offer in my letter to BJP president Rajnath Singh. I am ready to save the life of Mahajan," Haider said.

He stood for hours in the BJP state office in Patna with a big placard in his hands declaring that he was ready to give his kidneys to Mahajan.

"Main apna kidney Pramod Mahajan ko daan karna chahta koon." (I wish to donate my kidney to Pramod Mahajan.)

Haider said he was awaiting response to his letter as he wanted to save life of Mahajan. "His life is precious for the country as well as for the party, not mine," he said.

The BJP leaders in Patna said Haider was the first Muslim who offered to donate his kidney to Mahajan at the risk of his life.

Mahajan's kidneys are functioning poorly and he has been on dialysis since Sunday.

Doctors at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, where the 56-year old politician was rushed to on Saturday after Pravin Mahajan shot at him from close range in a 'fit of rage', said Mahajan was still on life support system in the intensive care unit.
