A sessions court on Tuesday directed jail doctors to give medicine to Zaheera Sheikh, prime witness in Best Bakeray case, for a gynaecological problem and posted for April 27 the recording of her plea in response to notice issued to her for giving false evidence during trial.

Hearing Zaheera's plea that medicines were not given to her, Judge Abhay Thipsay asked the medical officer of Byculla womens prison to provide medicines and submit a compliance report on or before April 27.

The Judge decided to record plea of Zaheera, her brother Nasibullah, mother Sahrunissa and sister Sahera on April 27 in regards to the notices issued by the court for giving false evidence.

If Zaheera and others plead guilty, summary proceedings will start the same day but if they plead not guilty, then the court will given them time and fix a date for trial.

Nasibullah appeared before the court, while Zaheera was brought from the Byculla jail, where she is undergoing a one-year sentence imposed on her by the Supreme Court for contempt of court.

Zaheera's mother and sister did not appear and sought exemption from appearance.

Judge Abhay Thipsay remarked, "No doubt Zaheera was a victim, but it appears that she was tutored and even today she is not ready to say who tutored her."

Summarising the perjury charges, judge told Zaheera that she had stated during the trial that she had not filed any complaint or FIR about Best Bakery catching fire during the post-Godhra riots in 2002.

He further pointed out that Zaheera had also not said that she was not aware about what had happened in the Supreme Court. The judge also said that Zaheera had stated that she was not aware about happenings in the Best Bakery case in Vadodara court.

All this constitutes prima facie lies and attract perjury charges, he said. On Zaheera's plea, the court allowed her to meet brother Nasibullah briefly in the presence of policemen.
