The condition of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan, who underwent a two-hour surgery Sunday evening after his vital parameters became unstable, continues to be "critical", the doctors attending on him said in Mumbai Monday.

"The condition of Mahajan continues to remain critical. He is in the Intensive Care Unit, on ventilator and on medication to support his blood pressure," Dr Anupam Verma, director, administration, Hinduja Hospital, where the BJP general secretary was being treated since shot at and critically wounded by his brother Pravin, told reporters.

Verma said Mahajan's kidneys were functioning poorly and he has been put on dialysis.

His condition is being monitored closely and efforts were on to stabilise him before contemplating any intervention, Verma added.

A team of doctors, led by Dr G B Davar, are attending on Mahajan, who was shot at by Pravin at his Worli residence in Mumbai on Saturday.

Verma said Mahajan is being monitored for pancreatic and hepatitic injuries, though bleeding from liver has stopped.

Vice President of Australian College of Surgery Steven Dean, who visited Mahajan late Sunday night and Monday morning, supported the medical services offered to the BJP leader.

"There is a highly expert team from England that is involved in treatment. The two operations that were performed were very appropriate decisions. I would have done the same thing in the same conditions," he told reporters in Mumbai.

Asked about Mahajan's health, Dean said it was up to the hospital authorities to inform about the developments.

Dean, who was on his way to Ahmedabad to attend a training course for doctors, visited Mahajan on a request by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
