Incoming flights at the Delhi airport, which were disrupted for about four hours due to strong and gusty winds, started landing on Friday afternoon with the windspeed coming down gradually, airport sources said.
The waning winds were, however, still blowing at 22 knots velocity instead of a high of 30 knots at the final approach of the landing, allowing the landing of large and heavy aircraft at the airport, they said. However, they added that weather may continue to be bad on Saturday.
The high windspeed had led to the diversion of a large number of flights, including the one carrying Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat from Jaipur and two international flights of Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic, which were diverted to Lahore.
Over 20 other incoming domestic flights were diverted to various cities, the officials said, adding that the velocity of the wind, accompanied by rains, at the final approach made it very difficult for the aircraft to land. The sources said all gadgets and instruments including the Instrument Landing System (ILS) were functioning normally.
