The announcement came after the world's biggest single aid donor said it would be open to assistance though it was not making an appeal for foreign aid.

Officials said the prime minister had wanted to speak to US President George W Bush over telephone on Friday but failed to do so since the US President was traveling.

Other countries like France, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan and Sri Lanka have also come forward to provide succour to the hurricane victims.
