Forced to work without payment for allegedly over two months, workers in Sharjah from India and other countries have raised the banner of revolt against their employers, who cut off their supply of essentials.

Employees of the Al Noor Garment company in Sharjah, the majority of whom are from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan, stopped work two months back due to non-payment of wages. They are now alleging that the canteen contractors have even stopped the supply of food, following non-payment of bills by their employers.

"We have no food now and are relying on food assistance given to us by the Sri Lankan consulate in Dubai," a worker was quoted as saying by the Khaleej Times on Monday.

A worker also complained that lack of payment to the Sharjah Municipality had resulted in no sewage tanks coming to the camps to clean the toilets, the daily said.

"We have no money because we have not been paid salaries," a worker said, adding that their wage-related case is supposed to come up for hearing at a local court soon.

"We hope there is some settlement so that our employer can settle our dues and repatriate us back home," she said.
