The proposal to allow people from both sides of the Line of Control to take part in reconstruction work in the quake-hit areas of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir may facilitate progress towards resolution of the decades-old Kashmir issue, President Pervez Musharraf told CNN in an interview on Thursday.

"Maybe yes, if the people come into the act, let the people generate some kind of solution for themselves," he said.

Asked about some of the extremist organisations' participation in relief activities, Musharraf said Pakistan had banned a number of terrorist organisations while it is keeping some under watch.

The government knows some of the organisations are active in some areas, but they are not the ones which have been banned, he said.

However, at this time everyone is motivated to do something for the suffering people and I would not deny anyone who is doing some relief work for the people in their hour of trial, Musharraf said.

Organisations carrying out relief work are not involved in any militant activity, he asserted.
