The Maharashtra government Wednesday set up a committee to examine the suggestions and objections received on the government's recent decision to ban plastic bags in the state.

The committee would be headed by former state chief secretary V Ranganathan and is expected to submit its report within a month, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

The other members of the committee include member secretary of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board Boralkar, Kisan Mehta of the Save Mumbai Committee and G S Varhade, director of the state Environment Department, Deshmukh said.

The government had received around 2,000 objections and suggestions to its decision banning plastic bags, which it had blamed for the large-scale choking of the drainage system in the city following the July 26 heavy rains.

The notification to ban plastic bags in Maharashtra was issued on September 14.
