Local independent member of legislative Assembly, Mukhtar Ansari and 100 others were booked on Tuesday in a first information report for inciting riots in Mau. The situation in Mau was under control with no untoward incident being reported from anywhere since Monday night, official sources said.

The FIR against them was lodged in the Kotwali Police Station area, booking them under various sections of Indian Penal Code for inciting riots, murder and violation of curfew on the complaint of Jitendra Yadav of Kachchar village on the outskits of the town, sources said.

Curfew continued for the fifth consecutive day and shoot-at-sight orders remained in force, as jawans of the Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary, and police personnel patrolled the streets under supervision of senior officials.

Security personnel have also been deployed at sensitive places in the neighbouring districts of Ballia, Ghazipur and Deoria, where stray incidents of violence had been reported on Monday, they said.

Principal Secretary, Home, Alok Sinha and Director General of Police, Yashpal Singh, were expected to visit Mau again to look into allegations by opposition parties, regarding Ansari's role in the communal riots, sources said.

An alert had been sounded in Varanasi, Azamgarh and Jaunpur districts and a strict vigil was being maintained.

Seven people were killed and 36 others injured in communal violence that rocked the town last Thursday over Dussehra celebrations leading to imposition of curfew.
