The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday sought the dismissal of the Mulayam Singh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh for its "complete failure" in checking communal violence in Mau.

The party also demanded an inquiry by a sitting High Court judge into the incident.

A seven-member party delegation, led by BJP National Vice-President Kalyan Singh, met Governor T V Rajeswar at Raj Bhavan on Monday and asked him to call in the army.

Later, state BJP President Kesri Nath Tripathi, who was part of the delegation, told reporters that they had apprised the Governor of the situation prevailing in Mau and that he had promised to look into the matter.

"The state government has failed to protect the lives of people and it should be immediately dismissed," he said, adding that the town should be handed over to the army for maintaining law and order.

"Police did not open fire at rioters despite a shoot-at-sight order in the riot-torn town and security personnel remained mute spectators to the mayhem," Tripathi said.

Tripathi also alleged that security personnel, instead of being deployed at places rocked by communal clashes, had been
stationed on the outskirts of the town.
