Overcoming the trauma of last December's tsunami, people of Andaman and Nicobar islands have sent food items for the quake-hit people in Jammu and Kashmir.

A little over 16 metric tonnes of biscuits and other food items were sent to rubble-strewn Kashmir valley from Andaman and Nicobar.

"They want to contribute whatever they can as the intensity of tragedy cannot be better known by any body other than the people of the Island," Secretary (Disaster Management) in Union Home Ministry D S Sankaran said on Monday.

Besides the food items, the administration in Andaman and Nicobar have also sent 200 tents, clothes and medicines.

"They don't want to be left behind when the country is facing a grave crises in its northern state," he said.

More than 10,000 people were killed when the tsunami had struck the Andaman and Nicobar islands on December 26 last year.
