The Congress party retained the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat when its candidate Priya Dutt defeated Madhukar Sarpotdar of the Shiv Sena by 172,043 votes in a by-election.

At the end of the 13th and final round of counting, Dutt polled 343,933 votes, while Sarpotdar polled 171,890 votes.

Priya Dutt's father Sunil Dutt's death in May caused the by-election.

Priya Dutt maintained a comfortable lead over Sarpotdar right from round one of the counting. As the rounds progressed, it was clear that the voters had sided with Sunil Dutt's daughter.

Her victory is being seen as an appreciation of Sunil Dutt's work in the constituency. He held the seat five times.
