Paramilitary forces and Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday afternoon nabbed for the first time ever a fidayeen (suicide attacker), and gunned down another bringing to an end a 24-hour operation in Srinagar's city centre.

Two militants on Monday afternoon hurled grenades and opened indiscriminate fire in the busy Lal Chowk area, killing two civilians and two security personnel.

13 others were injured.

The militants then had entered a hotel building, from where they engaged security forces in heavy fire.

"The operation is over and one fidayeen, identified as Aijaz Ahmed Bhatt, has been arrested, while the other was killed," Jammu and Kashmir Director-General of Police Gopal Sharma said.

He said Bhatt, who is from Faisalabad in Pakistan, was arrested while he tried to escape from the building.

The second fidayeen was killed later, he said.

On Tuesday morning, three civilians were rescued from the hotel building.
