Ashok Kamdar alias Ashok 'Royal', an alleged associate of arrested bookie Shobhan Mehta, was on Thursday taken into custody for questioning, police said.

Ashok was picked up for questioning, Crime Branch Unit III inspector Momin Aslam said.

Ashok was Mehta's partner in his betting syndicate and used to operate from Malad, the police said.

"We will question him and see what information we get," Aslam said while replying to a query on whether Ashok would be arrested.

Mehta was on Wednesday remanded in police custody till May 21 for allegedly using an illegal telephone exchange for running a match-fixing racket.

Police claimed investigations had revealed his alleged nexus with bookies in Pakistan and Dubai.

Mehta has been booked under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and under provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act and the Gambling Act.

The police had earlier arrested three co-accused in the gambling case -- Ramesh Vyas, Tushar Trambak Gandhi and Nemichand Kanungo.

They claimed that Mehta used two mobile phones to take bets on cricket matches.

However, the police were yet to seize the cell phones used by Mehta.

The police also claimed that they had learnt during investigation that one phone was used by Mehta to call certain persons in Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Dubai, and that they need to probe those persons who were involved in betting.
