The foreign secretaries of India and Bangladesh will meet next month to find ways to settle outstanding issues facing both countries.

"We have discussed unresolved issues with India and the border problem, but the main focus of the meeting was to discuss bilateral ties with neighbouring countries," Foreign Minister Morshed Khan said after an inter-ministerial meeting on Thursday, downplaying media reports that the meeting was called to discuss deteriorating ties with New Delhi.

India-Bangla relations have been at a low due to the recent cross-border firing by Indian and Bangladeshi troops, Bangladeshi infiltration into India across border areas and the incidents of killing of Indian villagers and Border Security Force personnel by Bangladeshis.

A parliamentary standing committee of the foreign ministry last month said that ties betwen Dhaka and New Delhi were at the lowest ebb, since the country's independence from Pakistan in 1971 with India's backing.

However, the Prothom Alo newspaper reported that border, trade and water issues with India were discussed at the meeting.
