Key witness in the Best Bakery case, Zahira Sheikh, has filed an application before the Supreme Court Registrar, who is investigating the veracity of her statement in the case, seeking directions for a probe into all bank accounts in the name of social activist Teesta Setalvad.
She has alleged that Setalvad, who had taken a lead role in bringing to the apex court's notice various irregularities in the probe of post-Godhra riot cases, had amassed huge wealth by illegal means.
Zahira also requested the Supreme Court Registrar to look into the bank accounts of Setalvad's relatives as well as
cross-examine the chairman of National Human Rights Commission, which had filed a petition in the court seeking transfer of the Best Bakery trial to Mumbai.
On the basis of NHRC's petition, the court had directed retrial of the case in Mumbai while quashing the acquittal of all 21 accused.
The apex Court had directed a probe to verify the veracity of statements of Zahira as well as Setalvad in the wake of allegation that both had given contradictory statements before the courts during various stages of trial and otherwise.
