March 29, 2005 03:57 IST

Sri Lanka has withdrawn the tsunami warning issued in the wake of an earthquake, measuring, according to the US Geological Survey, 8.7 on the Richter Scale, off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The country's Meteorological department said residents in coastal areas could return home.

The warning was withdrawn, as there was no report of unusual sea activity in the Indian Ocean.
