Goa oil spill stopped

The oil spill that sparked an alert off the Goa coast on Wednesday has been stoppped.

The Directorate General of Shipping said on Thursday that the spillage caused by collision of a barge with a bulk carrier had been stopped and that the situation was being closely monitored.

"The communication centre of the DGS is closely monitoring the impact of the oil spill," senior deputy director general of shipping Naresh Salecha said in Panaji.

Nearly 100 tonnes of fuel oil was reported to have spilt into the sea and the leakage was controlled by the vessel by transferring the oil from the leaking tank, he said.

"Mormugoa port has mobilised oil skimmers for collecting the recovered oil," he added.

In addition to these measures, the Coast Guard has deployed two ships and an aircraft with oil dispersant chemicals to clean up the spill.
