A military court dismissed Major General P S K Chaudhary from service and sentenced him to one year rigorous imprisonment on Wednesday.

The court found him guilty of 'accepting illegal gratification and committing professional impropriety.'

The seven-member general court martial, headed by the director general of defence artillery, awarded the punishment on the basis of videotapes produced by the news portal tehelka.com

The tapes showed Chaudhary allegedly accepting RsĀ 1
lakh besides a gold chain, and interacting with representatives of a fictitious foreign arms dealer.

The punishment is subject to confirmation by the chief of Army staff.

tehelka.com had carried out a sting operation in 2001. The portal caught a number of senior officers and politicians demanding and accepting gifts, including cash, from non-existent arms suppliers.

Chaudhary was additional director general, weapons and equipment, at the Army headquarters in New Delhi when he was caught.

Earlier, Major Anil Sharma of the Master General of Ordnance branch was dismissed from service and sentenced to four years in prison at Chandi Mandir on similar charges.

The general court martial proceedings had started last May.

Three senior officers are facing trial in the Tehelka case.
