The Kerala high court on Thursday issued a notice to the Bar Council of India on a petition by a nun challenging the decision of the state bar council not to permit her to enrol as advocate.
The petitioner, Sister Teena Jose, also sought a declaration that religious priesthood was not a profession and that she, a religious nun, should be allowed to enrol.
When the petition came up before Justice K Balakrishanan Nair, he admitted the same and issued a notice to the Bar Council of India.
The Kerala Bar Council's enrolment committee had recently decided against permitting the nun to enrol as she was engaged in religious activity.
Challenging this decision, she approached the high court. According to the petitioner, the committee's decision was illegal, arbitrary and a violation of the Constitution.
She said she was a law graduate from the Mahatma Gandhi University and was not engaged in any kind of salaried job or activity. She was only following a religious lifestyle.
