China has expressed its opposition to the expansion of the UN Security Council in permanent category, describing the move by the Group of Four comprising India, Japan, Germany and Brazil as dangerous.

"It will split the house and destroy the unity and derail the whole discussion on big UN reform," Chinese Ambassador to
the UN Wang Guangya said on Friday.

Asked why India with a population of one billion and a growing economy be not a permanent member when China is, Wang said Beijing had fought the World War - II -- on the side of allies -- and is the original member of the Council.

Asked whether China would veto the move by G-4, which is seeking permanent membership of the UNSC, or withhold ratification of the amendment to the Charter to give effect to increase in the number of permanent members, he replied in the affirmative but said he does not believe that such a situation would arise.

"They (G-4) do not have two-thirds majority" to get the three resolutions they propose to move through the 191-member General Assembly, he said.

India, Japan, Germany and Brazil  plan to move a framework resolution which would call for expansion of the 15-member body.
