The Supreme Court on Friday sought Attorney General Milon Banerjee's assistance to examine whether it should entertain a petition challenging inclusion of tainted persons in the Union council of ministersĀ in the absence of any debate in Parliament on the issue.

Posting the matter for hearing on August 1, a bench headed by Chief Justice R C Lahoti also appointed senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi as amicus curiae in the matter.

Amicus Curiae refers to a party that is not involved in a particular litigation but that is allowed by the court to advise it on a matter of law directly affecting the litigation.
