Tsunami: TN proposes Rs 5000 cr wall

The Tamil Nadu government has proposed a Rs 5,000 crore wall to protect the state's coastline from the sea's fury.

Close to 8,000 people died in Tamil Nadu when tsunami waves struck its coast last month.

Emerging from an hour-long meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa told reporters in Chennai that she made a special request to the prime minister for assistance to construct a wall along the 1076-km

coastline from Chennai to Kanyakumari.

The chief minister said the prime minister indicated that the Centre would consider seeking a loan from the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank for the purpose.

The assistance for the proposed wall, Jayalalithaa said, will be in addition to the Rs 4,800 crore sought by the state government to cope with the massive damage caused in the December 26 tsunami.
