Militant and ultra Left groups used Kolkata as a centre for exchanging views and collecting funds, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said on Friday.

"Militant organisations are active throughout the country and we are also affected by their activities though we are still in relative peace in the state," he said.

Naxalite groups came to the state from Andhra Pradesh while the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation was trying to re-group and rebuild its organisation, the CM said while addressing a meeting of Kolkata Police Association at Lalbazar police headquarter in Kolkata.

He acknowledged the fact that 48 police stations and 26,000 police personnel in Kolkata were inadequate for the one crore population of the city.

The WB chief minister said of late there had been an increase in the number of economic offences.
